May 1987 – Sept 1997
Honeywell Inc., Industrial Automation and Control Division, Phoenix, Arizona

  • Principal Control Engineer, Pulp and Paper Advanced Controls
  • Project manager for advanced control product, applying Neural Networks and multi-variable predictive control. Coordinated activities of several domestic and international development groups. Produced project plan and work breakdown structures, track cost and schedule, reported to management and marketing. Wrote data access modules using object oriented C++ on HP-UX, Solaris, and VXWorks platforms. The Neural Net development resulted in the most accurate and flexible model identification in the industry for the process.
  • Designed and developed a serial communication link between Honeywell and ABB systems which were installed successfully by field personnel using the installation tools and documentation that I provided.
  • Installed Machine Direction and Cross Direction advanced control packages at numerous paper mills
  • Installed excess oxygen control and interlocks on chemical recovery boiler
  • Installed a pulp mill recovery system, which passed EPA inspection and prevented shutdown.
  • Designed and developed bleach plant advanced control package
  • Completed design and installation of ladder logic for a pulp mill brownstock system
  • Restored a TDC 3000 Application Module corrupted database on a live system while the powerhouse was online without effecting process operations.
  • Initiated software development practices, the addition of new system features, and development of productivity tools for TDC 3000.
August 1984 - May 1986
S.D. Warren Paper Co., Somerset Operations, Skowhegan, Maine
  • Co-op student
  • Calibration and testing of paper machine sensors. Used statistical analysis of results to determine calibration coefficients. This gave operations personnel a more accurate and timely indication of product quality.
  • Identified design issues in sensors which prevented calibration to lab test equipment. This avoided wasted efforts in trying to calibrate sensors that could not be calibrate
  • Development of process graphics for all steam systems in DEC PDP-11 based control system. This was used during operations for an enhanced view of the process, and served as a valuable training aid for operations personnel
